This unique Earth Sheltered house is situated within the New Forest, in the National Park – an area of outstanding natural beauty. The brief set out parameters for a discrete and ecological home. The house uses the constraints set out by it’s demanding setting to inform it’s design: the earth form merges into its surroundings and supports the ecology by providing a sustainable habitat for local flora and fauna.
Many elements of the construction are unique; Gabion cages act as retaining walls marking the openings and supporting a bespoke window system through which a vast expanse of natural light is provided. Each room has an unspoiled view of the New Forest making a connection to the surroundings and including external terrace space for each inhabitant.
The project facilitated research and development into the technical issues of sustainable design of which Carl Turner Architects are fully committed.
