We were asked by two designers who work for the RCA to design and build a new home and studio for them in an industrial alley in Bethnal Green.
The existing building was demolished, and a new space carved from the resultant site. Difficult planning, party wall, structural and cost constraints had to be overcome.
The ground floor and mezzanine office space will be clearly delineated from the living spaces on the first and second floors. Both spaces are defined as ‘L’ shaped forms within a cube. A dramatic double height, Georgian-wired glass street elevation, brings natural daylight to the interiors and gives a powerful street presence. A small roof terrace is concealed behind the seamless glazing of the front elevation.
